At the end of June, Burnsview High School in Delta, BC received a Haas desktop CNC milling machine donated by the BC Metal Manufacturers Advisory Group (BCMMAG) through the BC Building Trust. The facility will be used to give students an idea of a career in engineering.
BCMMAG is a collaboration between local manufacturers including Udo Jahn of Modern Engineering, the Architecture Foundation, provincial educators such as Courtney Rimaldi, machine tool dealer Thomas Skinner and other British Columbia businesses. The goal of BCMMAG is to promote mechanical engineering as a viable career option and fill the current skills gap in the manufacturing industry by supplying this type of machine tool to every school district in the province. Delta High School students received the technology last year through the same initiative.
“We wanted to create a support model for schools to help them make manufacturing and machining a destination for young people,” Yang said. “We’re trying to figure out what the school needs to support this work, and since Modern Engineering is based in Delta, we’ve selected another school in the Delta School District for our latest donation. What we learn from this will help us support other schools in the future.” school district.”
“Haas makes world-class automated equipment and Burnsview is pleased to be the 10th school in British Columbia to receive a desktop CNC router,” said Burnsview High School teacher Sami Shah. “Burnsview students will be at the forefront of contemporary applied design skills and technology in the Lower Mainland as hands-on learning of complex CNC automated machining will now become a competency in woodworking and metalworking courses.”
“This is a great thing for our school and helps shed light on technology education in Canada,” said Tim Franzke, teacher at Burnsview High School. In contrast, most high school programs in Canada rely heavily on donations from local companies. We are very grateful to BCMMAG for their generous donation. Students are excited to return to school in the fall to start using the new device.”
Yang recently attended the Delta Job Fair, organized by the Delta School District in partnership with the Delta Work BC Centre.
“I find it interesting that many young people do not have a goal for their future career. A lot of young people just want to work,” Young said. “I think that our efforts and participation in job fairs and at the school level will help young people find various technical opportunities for work in production. Many companies complain that they cannot find people. We believe that we do not have enough people”, but there is a shortage of qualified personnel. In order to create more skilled workforce, we need to start teaching at the high school level. The sooner we start more training and skills development, the sooner we can address the skill gap.”
“Udo is deeply committed to promoting manufacturing as a rewarding and rewarding career choice for students, and we are very fortunate to have his support in our district,” said Lisa Chapesky, District Coordinator of Student Choices and Opportunities. “In addition to his efforts at BCMMAG, he has hired several Delta School District graduates in the past and recently hired two Delta High School students to work summers in the Advanced Engineering department.”
